Day 6 - A mother's love

Today, I'm smiling because it's my mother's birthday... and without her, I wouldn't be here.

When you're younger you never really think about precisely how much hardship your mother has endured to bring you into this world. Sure, it's crossed your mind from time to time, and for myself I mostly end up cringing and try to shake the images out of my head afterwards. Only recently through family and close friends was I exposed to the full-blown explicit, intricate and gruelling (and horrifying) details of what a mother goes through during childbirth, and far out - they don't call it labour for nothing.

I believe it's not until the very second you become a parent that you begin to have an idea of what your mother went through to have you - and it isn't limited to just the birthing process. It's from being formed from an embryo (conception is a miracle in itself), to being carried for 9 months, to being born, to hundreds of sleepless nights, to thousands of memories of joy and anguish, to watching you eventually growing into a man or woman but still calling you their baby.

Over the years, Mom has taught me a few things:

  • The importance for a girl to be independent
  • Never sleep with the fan blowing directly on your face
  • You're never too young to start using eye cream
  • A man is not a financial plan
  • Age is just a number, you are as young as you feel
  • You are never too old to learn new things
  • Family always comes first, and family is always there for you
  • Never underestimate good health - you never fully appreciate it until you become unwell
  • You should always apply your facial moisturiser in an upwards motion
  • Love what you do
  • Attitude is important, positive thinking works
  • Respect the elderly
  • Don't dye your hair if you don't have to, and you don't have to if you don't have grey hair

And last but not least - All a mother ever wants is for her child to be happy, and she will love them through thick and thin unconditionally.

Thank you Mom for everything you've done for me. Happy Birthday!
